1. Harpagophytum procumbens (commonly known as Devil's Claw) grows in the Kalahari savanna of southern Africa, including seasonal forests in Namibia, parts of the Republic of South Africa, Botswana, Angola, and Zimbabwe. Belonging to the same family as sesame, it is a perennial herb with multiple annual stolons growing from a fleshy taproot and tubers growing from the lateral roots. At the beginning of the rainy season, the creeping branches emerge, while in the dry season, secondary rhizomes store essential water. Its hook-shaped fruit, reaching up to 15 cm in diameter, features curved barbs.
2. Devil's claw tuber contains a variety of active components. The pharmacologically active substances are primarily iridoid glycosides (around 3%), including harpagoside, procumbide, and 8-O-benzo-harpagoside, with harpagoside being the key active marker. These iridoid glycosides are recognized for their exceptionally wide range of beneficial biological activities.
