Silymarin is a kind of flavonoid lignans compound extracted from the seed coats of the medicinal compositae Silybum marianum. It is a light yellow powder, bitter in taste. It is soluble in Acetone, Ethyl Acetate, Ethanol, and Methanol, hardly soluble in chloroform, and insoluble in water.
The main ingredients of Milk Thistle extract are: Silymarin, Silybin, Isosilybin, Silydianin, Silychristin, etc. Milk thistle originated in India and Pakistan, and was later cultivated in many regions of Europe, America, and Australia. In 1952, the Beijing Zoo first introduced milk thistle as an ornamental plant from the United Kingdom. In 1972, it was introduced from Germany for cultivation as a medicinal plant.
